Block Drop: stack flat or dig a well?
21 October 2026 · Hanpango · figures come from the actual Block Drop code (10×20 board, seven-piece shuffled bags, line scores 100, 300, 500 and 800 times the level)
Two pieces of advice that disagree
Advice for falling-block games splits in two. One camp says keep the stack flat and never leave holes. The other says leave one edge column empty and clear four lines at once with the long bar. The first is about surviving, the second about scoring. We had the computer play both to the end, each with and without hold, 200 games apiece and 800 in all. For every piece it tries all four rotations and every column and drops straight into the spot with the best board shape. There is no time pressure and a game stops at 400 lines. For comparison, placing pieces at random cleared 0.2 lines on average and ended after 25 pieces.
800 games, side by side
Flat: 100% reached 100 lines, score at 100 lines 67,578, 0.4% of lines cleared as fours, 109 points per line. Flat with hold: 100%, 66,382, 0.1%, 105. Well: 34%, 89,950, 33.3%, 157. Well with hold: 85%, 108,281, 76.0%, 186. Score at 100 lines averages only the games that got there, and points per line are before the level multiplier: singles alone give 100 a line, fours alone give 200.
Flat survives, the well scores, hold makes the well possible
Flat stacking got every game past 100 lines, and with hold every game reached the 400-line cap, but nearly all its clears were singles. The well paid 1.4 to 1.7 times as much per line, yet without hold only a third of those games reached 100 lines: when the bar is late you stack yourself out, and when it is early it has nowhere to go. Hold lifted the well to 85% and 76% of lines cleared as fours. Even so only 48% of well games reached 400 lines against 100% for flat. The well wins on score, flat stacking on survival.
The bar never waits more than twelve pieces
The game shuffles all seven pieces into a bag and deals the whole bag before shuffling the next. Across seven million pieces the long bar arrived after 6 other pieces on average and never after more than 12, which happens when it is first in one bag and last in the next. Fully random dealing would make you wait more than 12 pieces 13.5% of the time, and up to 59. The same piece twice in a row only happens across a bag boundary, about 2% of the time. With three pieces shown in the Next box, counting whether this bag has already dealt its bar tells you roughly when the next one comes.
Fill the well as the level climbs
Real games speed up every ten lines. Using the game's own drop formula, one row takes 1 second at level 1, 0.36 at level 5, 0.13 at level 8 and 0.064 at level 10; from level 15 the piece drops a row every screen refresh. Top to bottom takes 20 seconds at level 1, 1.3 at level 10 and 0.33 from level 15. A sensible plan: dig the well and bank bars in hold through levels 1 to 5, when the habit pays most; around level 8, once the stack passes half height, clear lines with whatever fits; after level 10 switch to flat stacking. Hard drops add 2 points per cell, but in our games that was only 2 to 4% of the score, so placing accurately beats rushing. For the same kind of test on another game, see how far the 2048 corner strategy goes.
